CAPAC Announces Leadership and Membership for the 113th Congress

February 15, 2013

Washington, DC—Today, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) announced its officers for the 113th Congress: Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) was re-elected as caucus Chair, Rep. Madeleine Bordallo (GU) as Vice Chair, Rep. Mark Takano (CA-41) as Whip, and Rep. Mike Honda (CA-17) as Chair Emeritus. CAPAC officers released the following statements:

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair: “It has been a privilege to chair CAPAC over the last two years, and I am honored by my colleagues’ continued faith in my leadership. The 113th Congress will take on a number of issues that are vital to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, from developing a common sense immigration process to rebuilding our economy and tackling health disparities. Asian Americans are now the fastest growing racial group in the country, which means that CAPAC’s work will be more important than ever. I look forward to working with our Vice Chair, Rep. Madeleine Bordallo, our Whip, Rep. Mark Takano, our distinguished Chair Emeritus, Rep. Mike Honda, our taskforce chairs, and every Member of our caucus to ensure that the Asian American and Pacific Islander community always has a strong voice in the U.S. Congress.”

Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo (GU), CAPAC Vice Chair: “CAPAC has been instrumental to raising awareness of issues important to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in Congress as well as in broader policymaking circles. During the 113th Congress, many of our community’s interests—including comprehensive immigration reform, promoting minority job opportunities, and decreasing health disparities—will come to the forefront, and CAPAC will work to ensure that our views are included in federal legislation. I appreciate the continued confidence CAPAC members have in me to serve as Vice Chair during the 113th Congress. I welcome all of our new members, and look forward to continue working with our Chair, Congresswoman Judy Chu, newly elected Whip, Congressman Mark Takano, and all CAPAC members, on behalf of AAPIs throughout our country.”

Congressman Mark Takano (CA-41), CAPAC Whip: “I’m honored to be selected by my colleagues to serve in a leadership role as the Caucus Whip for the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. Since its founding in 1994, Members of CAPAC have worked tirelessly to ensure that the AAPI community is properly represented in Congress and I'm proud to continue that tradition. I’d like to thank Chairwoman Chu and Chair Emeritus Honda for their commitment towards CAPAC and their devotion towards civil rights for all Americans.”

Congressman Mike Honda (CA-17), CAPAC Chair Emeritus: “As Chair Emeritus, I am proud to welcome new and returning CAPAC Officers and Members. As we start the 113th Congress, I am excited to see our Caucus join together in solidarity in taking our place at the table of democracy and in discussions about immigration policy, healthcare, our economy, improving education, and social and civil justice. I look forward to working with our Caucus leadership and fellow taskforce chairs as we address the complexity and richness of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.”
