CAPAC Applauds Department of Labor’s Announcement to Update Asian American and Pacific Islander Labor Force Report

Washington, DC – Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Labor announced its intent to issue an updated special report on the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) labor force. Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements:

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:

“I am pleased by the Department of Labor’s announcement to update its report on the Asian American and Pacific Islander labor force. CAPAC has made it a top priority to ensure that federal agencies provide more accurate and disaggregated data on our diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and we applaud the Department of Labor for being a true leader on this front. I want to especially thank Secretary Perez and Deputy Secretary Lu for their commitment to provide the data we need to better understand and address the economic needs of the AAPI workforce, and I look forward to seeing the new report when it is released this summer.”

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez:

“Members of the AAPI community and policymakers have been understandably frustrated by a lack of quality data on AAPI workers and the economic challenges they face. The Department of Labor is committed to updating our data on the characteristics of the AAPI labor force to provide information on unemployment rates, labor force participation rates, and long-term unemployment rates in a way that allows policy makers to identify disparities, and better target policy solutions to the AAPI community. We are proud to be contributing to these efforts, and are excited to release updated disaggregated AAPI data soon.”

Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06), CAPAC Economic Development Task Force Chair:

“Recently, Rep. Judy Chu and I called on the Labor Department to issue new data about the AAPI labor force, and I am pleased that officials will be moving forward with our request. This updated information will provide more details about the Asian American and Pacific Islander population, and that data will allow us to better understand and address the needs of the AAPI workforce. I look forward to seeing this new data when it is released over the summer.”
