CAPAC Members Celebrate Lunar New Year

February 1, 2022

Washington, D.C. — Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements to welcome the Lunar New Year, which begins on February 1, 2022 and marks the Year of the Tiger:

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:

“I always look forward to Lunar New Year and the chance to celebrate with family, loved ones, and community. This holiday, central to the lives of billions around the world and millions right here in America, is also an opportunity for us to begin a new year with renewed purpose and energy. This year, as we celebrate the Year of the Tiger, we also celebrate the attributes of strength and courage, the same qualities we will need to face the enormous challenges that continue to face our communities, like the ongoing threat of anti-Asian violence and a full recovery from the pandemic. I wish all who are celebrating a happy and prosperous new year!”

Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06), CAPAC First Vice-Chair:

“Lunar New Year is the most significant time of year for many in the Asian American community. It is observed by millions of people across the globe, and the popularity of the holiday in the U.S. only continues to grow. In Congress, I am continuing to champion legislation that seeks to recognize the cultural and historical significance of Lunar New Year, and I’ve also introduced a new bill to make Lunar New Year a federal holiday in the United States. I wish a very warm and happy Lunar New Year to everybody ringing in the year of the tiger. I hope that you and your loved ones have an enjoyable, healthy and safe celebration. May you find good fortune, prosperity and success in the year ahead.”

Congressman Mark Takano (CA-41), CAPAC Second Vice-Chair:

“Happy Lunar New Year to everyone celebrating in my district and across the globe! This is the year of the tiger, a symbol of strength, courage, bravery, and ambition. I hope we exemplify these qualities throughout the year, to overcome this pandemic and create positive change in our communities. May this year bring new beginnings, good health, and prosperity to all!”

Congressman Ted Lieu (CA-33), CAPAC Whip:

“Happy Lunar New Year to those celebrating in California’s 33rd district and around the country! While this year’s family reunions and celebrations will look different, I hope we are able to welcome the Year of the Tiger with happiness, prosperity, and peace. From my family to yours, Happy New Year and may it be full with good fortune and health.”

Senator Mazie Hirono (HI):

“To everyone celebrating in Hawaii and across the world, Happy Lunar New Year! Although the last couple of years have hit our communities hard, the Year of The Tiger brings strength, courage, bravery, and the hope for a better year to come. I hope you are able to celebrate with your family and that this Year Of The Tiger brings happiness, good health, and prosperity.”

Senator Tammy Duckworth (IL):

“To all who are celebrating in Illinois and around the world: happy Lunar New Year! I know the few years have been difficult—not only has the AANHPI community been on the forefront of this pandemic, but Asian Americans also faced unprecedented hate and violence. With 2022 bringing us the Year of the Tiger—which symbolizes strength, bravery and confidence—I am hopeful that we’ll have a better upcoming year. During this Year of the Tiger, I’ll keep working to make sure our communities are safe.”

Congressman Ami Bera (CA-07):

“I would like to extend warm wishes for joy and good health to all those celebrating the Lunar New Year in Sacramento County and around the world. As we enter the Year of the Water Tiger, we are reminded to be courageous and bold in our actions and relationships.”

Congressman Al Green (TX-09):

“As we head into the Tear of the Tiger, I’d like to extend my warmest wishes to Asian communities in the Ninth Congressional District of Texas, across the United States, and around the world. It is an honor to celebrate this joyous holiday alongside my Asian American and Pacific Islander brothers and sisters as we move forward into the months ahead with bravery, confidence, and strength—the qualities of the tiger. May this year be filled with good health, prosperity, and much success for you and your loved ones. Happy Lunar New Year to all!”

Congressman Ro Khanna (CA-17):

May the coming year be happy, healthy, and prosperous for all.”

Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10):

"Wishing everyone in the South Sound and across the nation a very Happy Lunar New Year. 2022 represents the Year of the Tiger, which is known for strength, courage, tenacity and dismissing evil. As we celebrate Lunar New Year, we reflect on the strength and foundation of all our AAPI cultures. This means honoring our heritage, speaking out against AAPI hate and do everything we can to protect our family, friends and loved ones. As someone who was born in the Year of the Tiger, let’s be strong, courageous and do everything we can to work together.”

Congressman Pete Aguilar (CA-31):

“I would like to wish everyone celebrating a happy Year of the Tiger. I hope you and your loved ones have a year filled with good health, good fortune and great success.”

Congresswoman Karen Bass (CA-37):

“Lunar New Year is a time of celebration for so many people here in Los Angeles and millions around the world. As we welcome the Year of the Tiger – a symbol of bravery – we honor the history and heritage of AAPI communities across America and stand in support and active defense in the face of challenges – like the rise of anti-Asian violence and hate. Our solidarity does not waver, not this year and not the next. Though many will not be able to gather in person with our families and our elders, we continue to forge ahead in our recovery from the pandemic. I want to wish everyone – virtual or otherwise -- warm wishes of health, success and happiness in the year ahead.”

Congresswoman Katherine Clark (MA-05):

“Happy Lunar New Year to all who are celebrating in America and around the world! Lunar New Year is a time of celebration, joy, and reflection as we prepare for the year ahead.
