CAPAC Members Celebrate Vaisakhi

April 13, 2021

Washington, D.C. — Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements to celebrate Vaisakhi, which marks the birth of the global Sikh community.

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:

“It is my honor to join the Sikh community in the United States and around the world in celebrating Vaisakhi and the birth of Khalsa. This annual festival is a time to celebrate the Sikh community’s rich history and commitment to upholding equality and justice for all, and the belief in generosity to others demonstrated by opening the doors of gurdwaras for anyone who wants a meal. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic still prevents large, in-person community gatherings and celebrations in much of the world. But that has not prevented the Sikh community from continuing to selflessly serve our communities. From preparing and delivering meals to hungry families to supporting health care workers fighting on the front lines, the Sikh community has undoubtedly helped our nation overcome this pandemic while bringing communities closer together. As the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, I wish a joyous Vaisakhi to all who are celebrating!”

Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06), CAPAC First Vice Chair:

“Warmest wishes for a Happy Vaisakhi to the Sikh community in Queens and across the world. I hope that despite the ongoing challenges of COVID-19, that you and your families have a safe and joyful celebration of the birth of Khalsa and the spring harvest festival. My best wishes for a happy new year to all those who observe this important day.”

Congressman Mark Takano (CA-41), CAPAC Second Vice Chair:

“As people around the world celebrate the Sikh New Year festival, Vaisakhi, let us all recognize the rich culture and the lively, centuries-old traditions of the Sikh community everywhere. The Sikh community in my district has been invaluable in helping people get through this pandemic by donating supplies and organizing food drives to ensure everyone is taken care of. These are the values they embody every day. And while Vaisakhi may look different this year, I wish you happiness, love, and light in your celebrations.”

Congressman Ted Lieu (CA-33), CAPAC Whip

“Happy Vaisakhi to the Sikh community and all who celebrate. Honoring the birth of Khalsa and spring’s arrival, Vaisakhi reminds us of the vibrant contributions that Sikh communities make to our country, and toward the ideals of equality and justice. Wishing you a prosperous new year of harvest and hope!”

Congressman Ro Khanna (CA-17):

“Wishing the Sikh community here in CA-17 and across the United States a Happy Vaisakhi! The start of a new year, let us all take a moment during the festivities to celebrate the rich contributions of the Sikh community to our country and be thankful for the time we’re able to spend with loved ones.”

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13):

“Happy Vaisakhi to all those celebrating in the East Bay and around the world! I join my colleagues in recognizing and celebrating the immense contributions of the Sikh community in promoting justice and equality across the country. I wish you all a joyous and prosperous Vaisakhi.”

Congressman Pete Aguilar (CA-31):

“I wish everyone in California’s 31st Congressional District a happy and prosperous Vaisakhi! This Sikh new year, I encourage everyone to reflect on ways to better serve & support their community. Sikh values of equality, selflessness, and community service greatly strengthen the United States. Happy Vaisakhi to all celebrating!”

Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04):

“Happy Vaisakhi to all those celebrating in Nevada’s Fourth District and across the United States! As our Sikh community marks the passage of a new year, I hope you find health, happiness, and joy on the horizon.”

Congresswoman Katie Porter (CA-45):

“Today, Sikh communities around the world celebrate Vaisakhi—which signifies the start of the Punjabi new year and commemorates the birth of the Khalsa. To all celebrating in Orange County and around the world, I hope you have a day of wonderful celebration and a year of joy ahead.”
