CAPAC Applauds Confirmation of Manish S. Shah to U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Senate voted 95-0 to confirm Manish Suresh Shah to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Shah is the first person of South Asian descent to serve as an Article III judge in the state of Illinois. Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements:

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:
“I am thrilled that the Senate confirmed Manish Shah to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Mr. Shah brings a wealth of experience from his work with the U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago, and I have no doubt that he will serve honorably on the federal bench. I congratulate Mr. Shah on his great success and wish him the best in his new role.”

Congressman Mike Honda (CA-17), CAPAC Chair Emeritus:
“I am delighted by the confirmation of Manish S. Shah to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. His experience as Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois for over a decade, as Chief of the Criminal Division, and his work as Chief of Criminal Appeals will serve him well in this new position. As Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Asian Pacific Caucus, I applaud the President for his continued commitment to promoting diversity on the federal bench. Background:
Since 2001, Shah has worked at the U.S Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. He currently serves as the Chief of the Criminal Division, and has held prior positions as the Deputy Chief of the General Crimes Section, the Deputy Chief of the Financial Crimes and Special Prosecutions Section, and Chief of the Appellate Section. Shah attended the University of Chicago Law School and Stanford University, and went on to clerk for Judge James B. Zagel of the Northern District of Illinois.
