Washington, D.C. — Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements applauding President Joe Biden’s nomination of Dilawar Syed to be the Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration:

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:

“I am proud to congratulate Dilawar Syed on his nomination as the Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration. I commend President Biden for his selection of another eminently qualified Asian American leader to join his Administration and am thrilled that Dilawar will be able to bring his expertise as an entrepreneur and small business leader to SBA during this critical time as we work to rebuild our economy. As the founding Chair of the California Entrepreneurship Task Force and Chair of President Obama’s White House Initiative on AAPIs’ Economic Growth Committee, Dilawar’s expertise in helping AAPI and other minority-owned businesses will be critical as we work to recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

“Over the course of the pandemic, AAPI small businesses have been among the hardest hit as they have grappled with both the economic impact of the crisis and the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes. This is something Dilawar understands well, and it’s why I was proud to lead my colleagues in a letter supporting his nomination. If confirmed, he will be the highest ranking Muslim American and one of the most senior Asian American appointees in the Biden Administration. I look forward to working with him to ensure that small businesses recover fully from the pandemic, and I urge the Senate to confirm him swiftly.”

Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez (NY-07), Chairwoman of the House Small Businesses Committee:

“As our nation’s small businesses continue to recover from the COVID crisis, it has never been more important to have experienced and dedicated public servants leading the SBA. The Biden administration has found that in Dilawar Syed. Mr. Syed has a passion for serving small businesses and entrepreneurs that has been evident throughout his career. He is also a trailblazer and will be the highest-ranking Muslim-American appointee in the Biden administration once confirmed. I congratulate him on his nomination.”

Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06), CAPAC First Vice Chair:

“I applaud Dilawar Syed on his nomination to serve as Deputy Administrator at the Small Business Administration. Mr. Syed is no stranger to public service and his expertise and experience will be crucial to help SBA navigate a post-COVID-19 future. Small businesses—especially minority- and women-owned businesses—have experienced significant economic upheaval due to the virus. We have a lot of work ahead of us and will need passionate public servants, like Mr. Syed, to help them recover. I urge the Senate to swiftly confirm him.”

Congressman Ted Lieu (CA-33), CAPAC Whip:

“I’m proud to support President Biden’s nomination of Dilawar Syed as Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA). Mr. Syed is a qualified candidate with extensive experience helping small businesses in both the private and public sector. If confirmed, he will be the highest ranking Muslim American appointee in the Biden Administration. I urge my Senate colleagues to confirm his nomination without delay.”

Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03):

“Dilawar’s nomination is great news for small business owners and employees across America, and great news for the AAPI community. We’ve seen small businesses hit hard throughout the pandemic, but minority-owned small businesses have been struggling with lack of access and advocates for far too long. I applaud this decision by the Biden Administration and look forward to working with Dilawar to help our small businesses build back better.”

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13):

“I join my colleagues in congratulating Dilawar Syed on his appointment to Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration and becoming the highest ranking Muslim American appointee in the Biden Administration. As we fight a global pandemic that has devastated small businesses across the country – especially minority owned businesses – Dilawar Syed’s leadership will be crucial in this role and I look forward to working with him to support small businesses through this crisis.”

Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (CA-18):

“Congratulations to Silicon Valley’s very own Dilawar Syed for his nomination as SBA Deputy Administrator. He is a great leader who has proven his economic expertise time and time again. Syed will help get our economy back on track and strengthen small businesses that are the backbone of our nation.”

Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35):

“I’m excited to see Dilawar Syed nominated to serve as Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration today. If confirmed, Dilawar will be the highest ranking Muslim American appointee in the federal government. His nomination speaks to both the Biden Administration’s commitment to diversity, as well as its focus on elevating highly qualified and effective leaders to serve the American people.”
