CAPAC Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

May 2, 2016

Washington, DC – Yesterday marked the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which commemorates the history, contributions, and achievements of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community throughout the month of May. Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) and Congressional Leaders released the following statements:

CAPAC LEADERSHIP

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to our nation.  From the Chinese railroad workers who helped to build our first transcontinental railroad, to trailblazers like Dalip Singh Saund, the first Asian American ever elected to the U.S. Congress, to visionaries like Patsy Mink, a fierce champion for women's rights who helped to pass Title IX legislation – AAPIs have played an integral role in contributing to the vibrancy of our country.  As Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, I will continue to fight for policies to provide a better future for AAPIs and all Americans.”

Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo (GU), CAPAC Vice Chair:

“I join my colleagues and all Americans in celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and recognizing the important contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to our nation. As Guam’s representative in Congress and Vice Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, I am well aware of the many challenges that face AAPIs, and important work that remains to address our community’s issues. I encourage all Americans to take time this month to learn about the achievements and sacrifices that AAPIs make to our nation and to gain a deeper understanding of the uniqueness of the AAPI community and our contributions to America throughout the centuries.”

Congressman Mike Honda (CA-17), CAPAC Chair Emeritus:

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month honors the spirit, accomplishments, and sacrifices of the fastest growing immigrant population in our country. I have always been proud to call myself Asian American; even when my ethnicity exposed me to bullying, discrimination, and even imprisonment. Asian Americans have overcome great hardships to become an integral part of America and continue to be resilient in the face of adversity. I strongly believe that the diversity of the American people is one of our greatest strengths. Asian and Pacific Islander Americans have made countless contributions in science, the arts, business, entertainment, athletics, and of course public service. This month, we celebrate these successes of our rich Asian Pacific American community and turn our focus to the future generations of Asian Pacific Americans who will carry on this legacy of accomplishment.”

Congressman Mark Takano (CA-41), CAPAC Whip:

“In honor of Asian American Heritage Month, let us celebrate the proud history and contributions of Asian Americans to our country. From the transcontinental railroad workers who laid the pathway for the growth of our nation, to the stars that have captivated our audiences in TV and film, the contributions of Asian Americans have influenced every facet of our nation, and continue to enrich us. As we reflect on the legacy of Asian Americans, let us focus on our community’s role in continuing to shape the future”

U.S. SENATORS

Senator Mazie Hirono (HI):

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made toward building a strong and vibrant America- from Chinese railroad workers who built the transcontinental railroad, to plantation workers in my home state of Hawaii who faced great odds to organize the first unions. We all have our stories to tell- stories like that of Filipino-American WWII veteran Domingo Los Banos. I’ve introduced legislation to recognize Domingo and his fellow Filipino WWII veterans with the Congressional Gold Medal for their brave service and sacrifice.  Stories like Domingo’s remind us all that we have a part to play in building on our nation’s rich history to better our communities.”

Senator Brian Schatz (HI):

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month reminds us to honor the deep roots and valuable contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Their accomplishments in business, science, public service, the armed forces, and the arts help sustain our country’s evolving economy and support global understanding and collaboration.  In Hawai‘i, Asian American and Pacific Islander traditions are a part of our daily lives, strengthening our communities and making our lives richer and better every day.  Join me in celebrating the diversity and vibrancy that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders bring to Hawai‘i and our country.”

CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP

Senator Harry Reid (NV), Senate Democratic Leader:

“Our nation is enriched by the more than 16 million people – representing 45 different ethnic groups and 28 languages – that make up this AAPI community, and I am grateful for their immense contributions to Nevada’s cultural and economic development. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have helped build, defend and strengthen our nation through their work as civil rights activists, rail-road workers, farmers, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, servicemen and women, and public servants. They have excelled in commerce, the arts, medicine, law, government and academia. Even through times of hardship and a long history of injustice, this community has persisted and forged ahead, helping to shape a more perfect union.”

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (CA-12), House Democratic Leader:

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebrates the beautiful cultures, monumental achievements, and rich contributions that Asian American, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have made to the rich fabric of our country," Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said. "Throughout our shared history, Americans of Asian descent have bravely defended, shaped, and enriched our great country.  We remain grateful to our neighbors for making America more American.”

Congressman Steny Hoyer (MD-5), House Democratic Whip:

"During Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I join in celebrating the innumerable contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our nation. Although they faced discrimination and exclusion at times, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders came to this country seeking the American Dream and have worked hard to attain it - starting businesses, serving in our military and in government, and succeeding in science, education, sports, and the arts. Throughout the country, AAPI communities are growing and thriving, and Congress has a responsibility to ensure that the families and individuals in those communities have the tools to succeed and make it in America. I'm proud to serve in Congress with my colleagues in the Congressional Asian and Pacific American Caucus, led by Congresswoman Judy Chu, who effectively advocates on their behalf in Congress. I thank them for their leadership, and I look forward to continuing to work to advance legislation that encourages the creation of jobs and increases access to opportunity, fixes our broken immigration system, restores voting rights, and ensures access to affordable health care and housing. Throughout the month of May, let us celebrate the rich and vibrant heritage of the AAPI community and thank them for all that they do to strengthen and enhance our nation."

Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chair of the House Democratic Caucus:

"I am proud to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month this May. As you walk around Los Angeles' Chinatown, Koreatown, Historic Filipinotown, Little Bangladesh, or Little Tokyo in my district, it's easy to see how these communities have helped build America. At a time when some would ignore the importance of America's rich and diverse heritage, we must recognize it as a key to our country's strength and prosperity. Let us honor then the generations of Asian American and Pacific Islanders whose dreams, sacrifice, and success make us a great nation."

Congressman Joe Crowley (NY-14), Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus:

“Throughout the month of May, we celebrate and recognize the countless contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to help build and strengthen New York and our entire country. Whether it is the sciences, arts, business, or government, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have played, and continue to play, an integral role in helping to shape American society. I’m proud to join my fellow Americans in honoring Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and I will continue to make the realization of equal rights for Asian Americans a key part of my work in Congress.”

CAPAC EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS

Congressman Ami Bera (CA-07):

“This May, we celebrate the Asian Pacific American community’s achievements in the arts, science, education, athletics, technology, and beyond. What makes America great is the diversity of culture, religion, and ethnic background that contribute to the fabric of our nation.  Asian Pacific Americans embody the values of hard work and sacrifice for themselves, their children, and their country. I’m proud to recognize their contributions that make our country a better place for every American.”

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08):

“Asian and Pacific Americans have long contributed to our nation’s success. Our community’s contributions to America’s culture, arts, military and infrastructure have been instrumental in the country’s growth and development. I’m pleased more and more Asian and Pacific Americans are joining our nation’s leadership—in corporate America, the Executive Branch and in the Halls of Congress. But we must continue to strive for progress for our community, beginning with recognizing and celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. So let’s celebrate the progress Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made while continuing our commitment to helping all members of our community to achieve the American Dream.”

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02):

“Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) have built a long legacy of achievements throughout our nation’s history. The exceptional contributions of AAPIs in government, business, military service, culture and arts, technology, sports, education, science, health, and so much more have enriched and strengthened our country. As we celebrate our shared heritage and history this month, we must also honor and continue the tireless work of those who came before us—leaders like Senator Daniel Inouye, Senator Daniel Akaka, and Congresswoman Patsy Mink—who broke down barriers, challenged the status quo, and fought to ensure a better future for the next generation.”

Congressman Al Green (TX-09):

“In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I would like to recognize the immense contributions of Asian Pacific Americans to our great nation. The Asian Pacific American community is rich with diversity and history that have become essential components of the American experience and story. As we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, my colleagues and I in the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), will also continue to diligently serve the interests of our AAPI constituents.”

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13):

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is an important time for our nation to reflect on the remarkable contributions of the AAPI community. In my district in California’s East Bay, the achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are front and center: by serving in elected office, opening new businesses, and participating in the arts, they are contributing to the vibrancy of our community. I’m honored to be a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus to advance the interests of my AAPI constituents. In my role as co-chair of the CAPAC Health Care Task Force, I am fighting to end the persistent health disparities in communities of color and ensure that everyone has access to culturally and linguistically competent healthcare. Happy Asian Pacific American Heritage Month!”

Congressman Ted Lieu (CA-33):

“This May, please join me in celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a time dedicated to honoring the incredible impact that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have had on our great nation. As our AAPI community continues to grow, we must act to pass critical comprehensive immigration reform and legislation that will create jobs, empower small businesses, spur innovation, and stimulate our economy. Whether it is serving in our military or making advancements in every field from science and technology to arts and education, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continue to shape the United States in tremendous ways and remind everyone that diversity is the bedrock our great nation is built on.”

Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-06):

“The diversity of our country has always been foundational to who we are as a nation,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “Throughout our country’s history, the Asian American and Pacific Islander community has made a monumental impact on our rich cultural identity through accomplishments in everything from innovation in the arts, to advances in science and academics. I urge all Americans to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month by valuing diversity in their everyday lives.”

Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06):

“This month we honor the contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to this great nation. As one of only fourteen Asian Pacific American members in all of Congress, this month is especially meaningful to me. In my home state of New York and across the country, Asian Pacific Americans have a prominent presence in our society. We have contributed to every facet of American life, including the arts, academia, science, sports, technology, business, and politics. We have fought in wars, and laid the tracks for the Transcontinental Railroad connecting the east to the west, forever changing American commerce. Asian Pacific Americans are now the fastest growing population in America. As we continue to put down our roots in the U.S., it’s important that we not only celebrate these contributions, but also invest in overcoming inequality that the community still faces today. I will continue to fight for the inclusion and acceptance of Asian Pacific Americans in American life, and look forward to celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month throughout the month of May.”

Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (CNMI):

“This May, the people of the Northern Mariana Islands join other Americans as we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The Pacific Islanders and people of Asian heritage have made tremendous contributions to our great country and are a pivotal part of our America’s history and identity. The Northern Mariana Islands are blessed with a rich diversity of peoples AAPI descent, and by working together to share and learn from our cultures, we make our community stronger. As the fastest growing segment of America’s population, we look forward to increasing the influence and impact the AAPI community can have in guiding our nation’s vibrant future. I join my colleagues in celebration and extend my best wishes for a joyous Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.”

Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03):

“I am proud to join my fellow CAPAC colleagues in celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage month.  Since the early 1800s, the AAPI community has played a vital role in the development and growth of this country. In the 3rd Congressional District of Virginia, AAPI Virginians provide valuable contributions to our community.  I encourage Americans of all backgrounds to educate themselves on the rich heritage of Asian Pacific Americans and to take a moment to honor their contributions to our great nation.”

Congressman Mark Takai (HI-01):

“Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrates the rich heritage our community has contributed to our nation. We should take this month to reflect on how far we have come, but to also recommit ourselves to working to ensure that all Americans can achieve the American dream. Our community has made great strides in breaking down barriers and making progress and we must continue this legacy.”

CAPAC ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

Congressman Raul Grijalva (AZ-03):

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is a time to reflect and celebrate the countless contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have made to this country. I ask my constituents in Arizona to join me in acknowledging and thanking the AAPI community for their contributions in bringing cultural diversity and keeping the spirit of the American Dream alive amidst challenges of economic opportunity, civil rights, and equitable immigration laws impacting lives every day.”

Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44):

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions and rich heritage of the AAPI community.  In my hometown of Los Angeles, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have had such an immense impact on the region’s history and its development.  I am proud to represent a vibrant AAPI community including large Cambodian and Filipino populations in the 44th district. Diversity is one of America’s many strengths and that is why I will continue to fight to fix our broken immigration system, expand opportunities for people of all backgrounds, and combat discrimination.”

Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47):

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebrates the numerous contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made and continue to make to strengthen the rich heritage of our great nation. California’s 47th Congressional District gives us much to celebrate— from Cambodia Town and the Filipino and Pacific Islander communities in Long Beach to the Korean Business District and Little Saigon in Westminster and Garden Grove. I have seen how our Asian Pacific American communities contribute to the vibrant fabric of our nation. This May join me in celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and the immeasurable strengths of our Asian Pacific American communities.”

Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (CA-32):

“As a proud representative of California’s San Gabriel Valley, I am so very pleased to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month this May. Our diverse district is greatly enriched by the daily contributions of the AAPI community. From jobs created by small business and manufacturing to the remarkable talents of our youth, these accomplishments are seen and felt throughout our region. This month we invite you to join us in honoring all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who strengthen our communities and continue to drive our nation forward.”

Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52):

“It is an honor to join my colleagues in celebrating May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The Asian Pacific American community is an essential piece of San Diego’s diverse and rich cultural fabric. They are leaders in science, innovation, health, education, business, and the arts. From taking care of our veterans and seniors, to supporting small business, to investing in research and quality education, we will continue to ensure that the voices of our Asian Pacific American community are heard in DC and San Diego.”

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40):

“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month gives us a chance to highlight the integral role the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community has played in writing the story of America.   Throughout America, AAPIs have made vital contributions to our nation’s economy, culture, and civic life.  The AAPI community’s determination, traditions, and spirit have helped to make America a stronger and more dynamic nation.  This month, we celebrate the AAPI community’s crucial and continued impact on our nation, and recommit ourselves to fighting for policies that will ensure Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a fair chance to achieve the American Dream.”

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46):

“Every year in May, we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by honoring the vibrant and diverse traditions, countless contributions, and tremendous accomplishments of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). It’s an opportunity to remember those who sacrificed, undertook perilous journeys to America, and overcame oppression and prejudice in order to build a better life for their families and future generations. Thanks to their sacrifice, AAPI communities have continued to thrive and prosper in America. I’m proud to represent a district that is home to one of the most diverse AAPI communities, including Little Saigon and the Korean Business District. These AAPI communities have strengthened Orange County and our great state of California. As a proud member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, I am committed to advocating for and further promoting the well-being of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in Congress.”

Congressman Adam Smith (WA-09):

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month commemorates the valuable contributions of Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) to our nation. The month of May was chosen to reflect on the contributions of the AAPI community in honor of the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, in addition to commemorating the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. This monumental infrastructure project was made possible through the hard work of Chinese immigrants. My district has strong and active AAPI communities and I’m proud to represent them as a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. In the Pacific Northwest we see firsthand the tremendous impact of the APPI community members who are members of our military defending our nation, civic leaders in society, and successful business entrepreneurs. I proudly join in celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez (NY-07):

“Those of us from New York City know that our diversity is our strength -- and Asian Americans are an important part of our nation’s beautiful cultural tapestry. Today, New York has the single largest Chinese population of any city outside of Asia. I’m proud to represent two of New York’s largest Asian American communities in Manhattan’s Chinatown and Sunset Park in Brooklyn. All Americans should take the opportunity during Asian Pacific American Month to pay homage to the rich history and many contributions of Asian Americans throughout the United States.”
