Washington, D.C. — Today, President Biden announced that he is nominating Olympic champion Michelle Kwan as the U.S. Ambassador to Belize. If confirmed, Kwan would become the first AAPI woman to hold this post. Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) issued the following statement:

“During her illustrious career as an ice skater, Michelle Kwan represented our country through her athletic accolades, including winning two Olympic medals for Team USA. I am so glad that after her career as an Olympian, she will now continue to represent the diverse talent of our country as the US Ambassador to Belize, and become the first AAPI woman to hold this post. Michelle Kwan has a distinguished career in public service and has been a Public Diplomacy Envoy since 2006, and has taken on many diplomatic projects since her appointment. I have no doubt that she will continue to be an excellent representative of our country in her new role. I hope the Senate will act swiftly on her confirmation.”
