Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), joined Democratic leaders in rolling out the Voter Empowerment Act, comprehensive voting rights legislation to modernize our voter registration system, ensure equal access to the ballot box for all Americans and prohibit voter caging and other deceptive practices that keep people from exercising their constitutional right to vote.

“In the past year, Republicans across the country have introduced over 150 bills aimed at disenfranchising voters – particularly young, elderly, disabled and minority voters,” said Chairwoman Chu. “As Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, I am proud to stand with my fellow Democrats to announce the Voter Empowerment Act, which aims to protect every citizen’s right to vote.  By building on established protections in the Voting Rights Act, this legislation is a step in the right direction to ensure that every eligible U.S. voter, no matter their background or circumstances, can have their voice heard in our democracy.”

The Voter Empowerment Act will protect voters from restrictive measures that have been enacted in states across the country over the last year. These measures make it harder for millions of eligible voters to register or vote, and disproportionally affects service members, the disabled, minorities, young people, seniors, and low-income Americans.

Congresswoman Chu joined Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Assistant Leader James Clyburn, Congressman John Lewis, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, House Administration Committee Ranking Member Robert Brady, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Charles Gonzalez in a press conference earlier today announcing the introduction of the Voter Empowerment Act.
