June 17, 2021

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S Senate voted 60-34 to confirm John K. Tien as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, making him the first Asian American to serve in the role. Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) issued the following statement:

“Congratulations to John Tien on being confirmed as President Biden’s Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security! This position is the second highest-ranking role at the Department of Homeland Security – a role John is incredibly well suited to take on due to his decades of military and national security experience. Having already broken barriers as the first Asian American to ever serve as West Point’s First Captain and Brigade Commander, I am thrilled that John will now be the first Asian American to serve as the Deputy Secretary of DHS helping to safeguard our nation. I’m grateful to President Biden for his commitment to working with CAPAC to ensure that highly qualified AAPI candidates like John are appointed to senior roles throughout our federal government.”
