Dec 20, 2021

Washington, D.C. — Last Friday, the Senate confirmed Judge Jinsook Ohta to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California and Judge Shalina D. Kumar to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Judge Ohta is the first AAPI judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, and Judge Kumar is the first federal judge of South Asian descent in Michigan. Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) issued the following statement:

“I am overjoyed that Judge Ohta has been confirmed as a District Court Judge for the Southern District of California, and that Judge Kumar has been confirmed as a District Court Judge in Michigan. Judge Ohta has served as a Superior Court Judge for the Superior Court in San Diego County since 2020, and has over a decade of experience at the Office of the Attorney General. Judge Kumar has sat on the bench of the Oakland County Sixth Circuit Court since 2007, and has served as the Circuit Court’s Chief Judge since 2018. Both these judges are well-equipped in their expertise in law and dedication to justice, and are excellent additions to our country’s justice system. I am so glad to see more and more AAPI women represented in our federal bench, and the growing diversity in our nation’s judiciary.”
