CAPAC Chair Statement on Confirmation of Judge Lucy Koh to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit

December 14, 2021

Washington, D.C. — On Monday night, the Senate confirmed Judge Lucy Koh to serve on the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Judge Koh is the first Korean American woman to serve as a federal appellate judge and only the second Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) woman to serve on the Ninth Circuit from California. Judge Koh was the US District Judge for the Northern District of California, where she has served since being nominated by President Obama in 2010. Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), who has written in support of Judge Koh in the past, issued the following statement:

“I have been proud to know and follow the career of Judge Lucy Koh for years, and so I am ecstatic that such a qualified and talented judge has been confirmed to serve on the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. As a District Court Judge, Judge Koh demonstrated a commitment to the law and the needs of our communities, as exemplified by her significant rulings to force the Trump Administration to produce an accurate census. Judge Koh has also served as a California Superior Court Judge for Santa Clara County, and served in the Department of Justice for seven years, giving her a deep expertise in federal law. I know that she will continue to be a champion for justice for all Americans as the first Korean American woman federal appellate judge.”
