CAPAC Chair Statement on New Biden Administration's New Border Enforcement Actions

Jan 6, 2023 Issues: Immigration

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, President Biden announced a series of new enforcement policies directed at the southern border. CAPAC Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) released the following statement in response:

“With continued congressional Republican refusal to fix our broken immigration system, I am encouraged the Biden Administration will be expanding legal pathways for some individuals seeking asylum. However, the expansion of some pathways must not come at the cost of access to asylum for others.

“To that end, I am deeply alarmed by the Administration’s decision to revive and partially expand harmful Trump-era policies like the cruel Title 42 border policy and the unlawful Trump asylum ban, which will block asylum unless individuals first apply in the countries that they traveled through.  Together, these actions will still limit the legal rights of immigrants seeking protection at the southern border and do not fulfill our country’s commitment to ensuring the fundamental human rights of those seeking relief here.

“I remain committed to working with my colleagues in Congress to comprehensively address our immigration system and border policies. Republicans must stop politicizing the plight of asylum seekers at our border and come to the table for bipartisan Congressional action to ensure our immigration laws are meeting the needs of the current global refugee crisis and upholding our core American values.”
