CAPAC Endorses Julie Su as the Nation’s Next Secretary of Labor

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) formally endorsed Julie A. Su to be the nation’s next Secretary of Labor. Presently, Su is Deputy Secretary of Labor for the Department of Labor and was supported by CAPAC Members during her nomination process. CAPAC had also supported her nomination to the Secretary of Labor position in 2020.

Current Labor Secretary Marty Walsh is expected to depart from the Biden-Harris Administration shortly, which would open a Cabinet-level position for the first time since President Biden nominated the initial members of his Cabinet in 2021.

CAPAC Members issued the following statement regarding the endorsement:

“Deputy Secretary Su has dedicated her career to the promotion of workers’ rights and fair labor practices and to advancing equity and opportunities for all workers, including ones from historically underserved communities. She would be a stellar, exceptionally qualified candidate to be Secretary of Labor and would deliver results for American workers and the Biden-Harris Administration immediately upon her confirmation.

“CAPAC is proud of its work to increase political representation for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities in government at all levels to ensure their interests and concerns are reflected in decision-making. We remain troubled that the Administration has no Secretary-level AANHPI official serving in the Cabinet, the first time we have not had representation at this level since 2000. As the nation’s fastest growing racial group and voting bloc, our AANHPI communities must have an equal seat at the most important policy-making table in the country.

“Given her experience serving as Deputy Secretary of Labor since July 2021, we know Deputy Secretary Su can hit the ground running on executing existing initiatives of the Department while implementing new ones. Because she is in the best position to understand the Department’s work and needs, and because the inclusion of an AANHPI as a Cabinet Secretary is long overdue, CAPAC endorses her to serve as Secretary of Labor and urges President Biden to swiftly nominate her to the role when appropriate.

“President Biden has the opportunity to better realize the ‘most diverse Cabinet in history’ with the elevation of Deputy Secretary Su. CAPAC urges him to seize that opportunity by nominating Julie Su as our next Secretary of Labor.”
