Mar 23, 2021

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Senate voted to confirm Dr. Vivek Murthy to be the U.S. Surgeon General. Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) issued the following statements:

CAPAC Leadership

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair

“I am thrilled to congratulate Dr. Vivek Murthy on his confirmation to once again serve our country as Surgeon General. Having an expert in public health like Dr. Murthy as part of the Biden Administration is vital, especially now as we continue to battle the coronavirus pandemic. As Surgeon General under President Obama, Dr. Murthy demonstrated his ability to communicate to the public and help combat public health crises. And as we work to address the coronavirus crisis, we will count on him for this leadership once again.

“It is also significant that he will be one of the top Asian Americans in our federal government at a moment when AAPI communities are being disproportionately impacted by both the coronavirus as well as surging anti-Asian discrimination and violence. During this critical time, it is significant to have a Surgeon General who understands these differences between communities and the need to target help where it is most needed in culturally and linguistically competent ways. I applaud President Biden for elevating such a qualified public health expert as Dr. Murthy and for his commitment to building a diverse federal workforce that more closely resembles the country we serve. “

Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06), CAPAC First Vice Chair

“I congratulate Dr. Murthy on his successful confirmation as Surgeon General of the United States. Now, more than ever, we need competent leaders to help rebuild our country from the devastating consequences of COVID-19. Our nation will benefit from Surgeon General Murthy’s expertise and steady hand. I look forward to supporting his efforts on behalf of the American people.”

CAPAC Executive Board Members

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07):

“Dr. Vivek Murty is an exceptionally talented, experienced, and compassionate leader who will continue guiding our country forward in our efforts to finally defeat this virus and tackle the many public health crises we face — from an epidemic of gun violence to environmental injustice. This confirmation is not only good for public health throughout America, it’s also an important step forward towards President Biden delivering on his promise to build a senior team that reflects the diversity of this nation and the full spectrum of experiences and needs across the country. I look forward to continuing to work alongside Dr. Murthy at a pivotal moment for public health, equity, and justice.”

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13):

“I am honored to join my CAPAC colleagues in congratulating Dr. Vivek Murthy on being confirmed as U.S. Surgeon General – a critical role for ensuring equity in our public health system at any time, but especially during a pandemic. It is crucial that the AAPI community has representation and strong advocates in the executive branch and across our federal government.”

Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10):

“With Dr. Vivek Murthy as our next Surgeon General, our nation will be in good hands and better equipped to save lives and defeat COVID-19. In addition to being a physician and experienced public health leader, as an AAPI, Dr. Murthy will bring valuable perspective to ensure our government reflects the diversity of our nation.”

CAPAC Associate Members

Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04):

“I congratulate Dr. Vivek Murthy on his confirmation as surgeon general of the United States. With his prior experience as surgeon general, Dr. Murthy brings unparalleled public health experience to this vital role at a critical time for our nation. I applaud President Biden for his commitment to ensuring that diverse voices are at the forefront of his administration.”

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-12)

“I am proud to congratulate Dr. Vivek Murthy on his confirmation to the post of Surgeon General. Dr. Murthy’s outstanding record of service in the field of public health, in addition to his prior service as Surgeon General, make him extremely well qualified for this position. There is nobody better suited to addressing systemic inequities in our public health infrastructure, overcoming the current public health challenges our nation faces, and improving the health outcomes of Americans across the country. Congratulations again to Dr. Murthy. I look forward to working with him.”

Congressman Adam Smith (WA-09):

“In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which has devastated our nation for well over a year, we need capable, experienced leaders to bring safety and stability to the health and well-being of Americans and their families. Dr. Vivek Murthy is exactly the individual needed to meet the moment as Surgeon General. As a co-chair of President Biden’s COVID-19 Taskforce, he has displayed his qualifications to tackle this pandemic and will continue to do so once confirmed to the role he had previously held for several years. Dr. Murthy’s confirmation would make good on the President’s promise to build a government reflecting the true diversity of our country, while also ensuring we have the most talented and dedicated individuals serving in the executive branch.”
