CAPAC Members Celebrate Lunar New Year

Feb 12, 2021

Washington, D.C. — Today, Members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements to welcome the Lunar New Year, which begins on February 12, 2021 and marks the Year of the Ox:

CAPAC Leadership

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), CAPAC Chair:

“Happy Lunar New Year to the millions of Asian American families in the United States and around the world who are celebrating today! Lunar New Year is a joyous occasion for millions to join with family, friends, and loved ones to celebrate our cultural traditions as we welcome the new year. 2021 is the Year of the Ox, a symbol of strength, reliability, hard work, honesty, and determination. Those attributes have special meaning this year because, like the Ox, we will rely on our hard work and determination as a community to get through the enormous challenges we are continuing to face due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including the recent spike in anti-Asian hate crimes. Despite these challenges, the Asian American community has shown great resilience in the face of adversity, and I know that this new year will bring brighter days to come. I wish everyone celebrating today a very happy, healthy, and prosperous Year of the Ox!”

Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-06), CAPAC First Vice Chair:

“My warmest wishes and a very happy Lunar New Year to those in my district in Queens and across the United States, who are celebrating the holiday. Lunar New Year is a special time for millions of Asian Americans to gather with family and celebrate new beginnings. This year marks the sixth anniversary of New York City creating an official school holiday for Lunar New Year. I am proud to have fought for this measure so that children can freely celebrate their cultural traditions with their family. Additionally, I am proud to introduce legislation every year since I have been in Congress for the U.S. House of Representatives to officially recognize the rich cultural heritage of Lunar New Year and what it represents for many Asian Americans across our nation. While our celebrations may look different this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, I wish you and your family health, prosperity, and good fortune in this Year of the Ox!”

Congressman Mark Takano (CA-41), CAPAC Second Vice Chair:

“Happy Lunar New Year to all celebrating in my district and around the world. Today we begin the Year of the Ox, a symbol of strength, reliability, and fairness. Although we are celebrating from a distance this year, let’s find ways to connect with friends and family to welcome this new chapter of peace, prosperity, and honor. May this new year bless you with good health and happiness. Happy New Year and best wishes in the Year of the Ox!”

Congressman Ted Lieu (CA-33), CAPAC Whip:

“Happy Lunar New Year to all who are celebrating in CA-33 and across the country! I hope this year, the Year of the Ox, will bring health and happiness to you all. Although this occasion will be celebrated differently this year, I’m glad we are able to find new ways to honor the traditions that come with this wonderful holiday and celebrate the new beginnings it represents. May this new year bring your families health, happiness and prosperity.”

CAPAC Executive Board Members

Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34):

“To everyone celebrating in California’s 34th Congressional District, Los Angeles, and around the world, I wish you a Happy Lunar New Year! While celebrations like our local Golden Dragon Parade may look different in 2021, I hope our community can commemorate this new year safely with friends and family. As we reflect on the year ahead, I know our collective strength and determination will lead to a healthier and brighter Year of the Ox!”

Congressman Ro Khanna (CA-17):

“Happy Lunar New Year to everyone celebrating the Year of the Ox! This new year holds incredible promise for our country. We are going to enact bold change, stand up for human rights and democracy, and recommit ourselves to pursuing the American project filled with hope for all our neighbors. Wishing everyone a healthy and prosperous new year from afar.”

Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03):

“Happy Lunar New Year to all celebrating across Burlington and Ocean Counties, and around the world. Although we might not be celebrating in person this year, let us still make this a time to come together virtually with friends, family, and our community to reflect on the past year, and to dedicate ourselves to a happy and prosperous year ahead. May the year of the Ox bring peace, good fortune, and joy to all who celebrate, and may you all have a Happy New Year!”

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13):

“Today, I’m proud to join the East Bay and communities around the country in celebrating and welcoming the Year of the Ox. This is particularly fitting for this year as Ox are known for their hard work and resilience –– qualities we must utilize to meet the challenges ahead for our country. As we start this new year, I wish health, happiness and prosperity to all!”

CAPAC Associate Members

Congresswoman Katherine Clark (MA-05):

“Wishing a happy and safe Lunar New Year to all those who celebrate! As we welcome the Year of the Ox, I am reflecting on the strength and persistence of our communities as we continue to help each other through the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s festivities may look different, but our compassion and love for one another is enduring and unbreakable. May your year be full of good health, prosperity, and happiness!”

Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01):

“A very happy Lunar New Year to everyone celebrating in New Mexico and around the world! While the past year has been full of many challenges, I hope we all use this opportunity to take time to safely celebrate new beginnings and look forward to the year ahead. As we welcome the Year of the Ox, I wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year!”

Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04):

“Happy Lunar New Year! As a proud honorary member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, I’m proud to join with my colleagues in wishing all those who celebrate a fulfilling and prosperous Year of the Ox filled with good health and celebration. The diversity of our country is a demonstration of our strength together and I look forward to ringing in the New Lunar Year with you all.”

Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03):

“Happy Lunar New Year to all those celebrating here in Nevada and around the world. I hope this new year brings good health and prosperity for you and your family. As always, I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus to make sure southern Nevada’s AAPI community has their voice heard, the stability and security they need to get through this pandemic, and the promise of a sound and prosperous future. Happy New Year and best wishes in the Year of the Ox!”

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12):

“I wish everyone celebrating, a very Happy Lunar New Year. May the Year of the Ox bring success, prosperity and happiness for you and your loved ones after what has been an extremely challenging 2020.”

Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52):

“The Lunar New Year is a special time to celebrate the vibrant customs of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in San Diego and across the country. Asian American immigrants have enhanced our country’s culture and shaped America into a better and stronger nation. As we welcome the Year of the Ox, may we remember the ox’s strength, reliability, fairness and conscientiousness. For those celebrating, I wish you and your loved ones happiness, prosperity and good health in the New Year.”

Congresswoman Katie Porter (CA-45):

“I’m honored to represent Orange County, where we are fortunate to be enriched by a vibrant and flourishing Asian American community. To all those celebrating the start of the new lunar year, I wish you and your family happiness, prosperity, and good health during this Year of the Ox.”
