Washington, D.C. — Leaders of the Congressional Tri-Caucus—composed of Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX-20), and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37)—issued the following joint statement after the House Democratic Caucus voted to include a Diversity Rule in the Caucus rules that encourages Members to prioritize diversity and inclusion in hiring practices:

“This Democratic Caucus is the most diverse in history—over 60 percent women, people of color and LGBTQ—reflecting the diversity of the American people. The Diversity Rule is an important step to ensure that every level of Congress represents our nation’s vibrancy and this institution is more open and inclusive of everyone we represent.

“As the crises of the coronavirus pandemic, mass unemployment, and racial injustice all converge to test America’s ability to overcome any challenge, we stand united in our values and determined to keep making progress for our communities. To rise to this moment, we have to start by making sure that lawmakers and congressional staffers on Capitol Hill truly reflect the diversity of our country.”
